Maybe I need to re-read Blindsight again, so it makes sense, but I was expecting a rendezvous with whatever vessel Siri travelled on. I don't know why Valerie was on the ship and heck, I don't even frigging understand why the Crown of Thorns was heading out into the outer solar system in the first place. I never actually understood why, goddamnit. Valerie seems to have been engaging in 'hacking' other passengers and their behaviour, using subtle imagery and movements etc. I'm a decade late to this thread, but to add to your questions.

Did Portia want to "help" humanity despite the Scrambler's mission to destroy it? Did Portia want to destroy humanity and Valerie was just wrong about it being for the greater good of humanity? Or do Valerie and the Scramblers have the same goal: the destruction of not humanity as a species per se, but merely the destruction of conscious human thought?Īlso, more of a plot hole than a philisophical debate: did Valerie know about Portia all along, even before arriving at Icarus? If so, how? If not, what the hell was she trying to accomplish in the first place?Įdit: Reading tvcgrid's reply above, while not a definitive answer of any sort, is definitely the my favorite explanation of the ending I've seen so far. And yet, Valerie wants to bring Portia back, believing that it's the key to evolve humanity, or vampires, or something. It acts like the scramblers: keeping hidden, attacking opportunistically, and infiltrating. It seems apparent that Portia was an agent of the Scramblers. Overall I enjoyed the book, but I have some questions I need to get off my chest: Sorry to reply to a half month-old thread, but there are disappointingly few places to discuss this book on the internet.
