They must deal with the poor rations of food that they can procure under the Nazi system, the billeting of Wehrmacht and SS officers at her home, and the increasing persecution of the Jews in the town. Vianne, a schoolteacher who is married and has a child, must endure the drafting and subsequent capture of her husband Antoine, the occupation of France by the Germans after the Battle of France, and the struggle against starvation and cold for herself and her daughter. Monsieur Rossignol is Vianne and Isabelle's father surrendered them to the care of a cruel, elderly governess after the death of their mother, and as a result has no relationship with either of his daughters. Captain Beck is a German soldier who is quartered in Vianne's home, he becomes close with Vianne and her family throughout the several years is stationed in the town. Sophie Mauriac is very young at the time of the German invasion, Sophie quickly becomes obsessed with her aunt Isabelle and her work with the Resistance. Antoine Mauriac is Vianne's husband, who remains in a prisoner of war camp for most of the novel, communicating only through the occasional letter that informs the family of his continued survival. Gaetan is an elusive Frenchman who befriends Isabelle at the beginning of the war, Gaetan is an integral part of the Resistance himself.
Isabelle Rossignol is the younger of the two Rossignol sisters, a fiercely rebellious girl who refuses to listen to other people's orders. Vianne Rossignol Mauriac is the older of the two Rossignol sisters, a teacher at the elementary school in her small, rural French town.
